Loading ...Alipio Fernandez, Jr. is the current mayor of Dagupan City, Ilocos, former Vice Mayor of the same municipality and former Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration.
He is the son of the last mayor of the municipality of Dagupan and the first city mayor when Dagupan became a city, Don Alipio Fernandez, Sr.
Prior to becoming a public servant, he worked as a sugar planter in his hometown in Pangasinan and as president and manager of a local rural bank in Central Luzon. In 1971, he ran and won as a city councilor and served as the majority floor leader of the Dagupan City Council from 1972 to 1974. During the Aquino administration, he became the Vice Mayor of Dagupan City and served as such for three consecutive years.
Among his significant accomplishments were in infrastructure, social services, livelihood, and development programs. During his incumbency, Dagupan City received various awards and citations, from both national and international organizations.
Al’s much esteemed stature among local government executives would earn him the presidency of the League of Cities of the Philippines from 1998-2001 and the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) in 2001.
After finishing the maximum tenure for a city mayor, Al’s efforts in local governance did not go unnoticed, and no less than President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo appointed him in September 2001 as Undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government. He also served as Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration.
