Tomas B. Morato was born on July 4,1887 in the picturesque seaport of Alicante, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. He was a full-blooded Spaniards and the only son in the family. His father was a ship captain who sailed Spain to the Philippines and frequently stopped at the coastal town of Calauag, Tayabas. In 1898, his father brought him here in the Philippines where he stayed in Calauag. He lived and studied here and finished his Engineering course at the age of 22. After his graduation he entered into lumber business where he amassed quite a fortune. Later, by virtue of a proviso in the Treaty of Paris which granted Filipino citizenship to all Spaniards who had decided to stay in this country, Morato became a Filipino citizen.
