Rey Malonzo  is a Filipino action star and politician. He rose to popularity by way of "kung fu" and "karate" movies in 1970s. Moreover, he embarked on directing a few movies in 1980s, and collaborated with American actors Brett Baxter Clark and Robert Patrick for the film Eye of the Eagle. In 1995, he won the mayoral seat of Caloocan City, and held the office for three consecutive terms. Prior to being an actor, he graduated with a degree in Police Science from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Malonzo ran for mayor of Caloocan City in 1995, and he defeated Macario ‘Boy’ Asistio; thus, putting an end to the decade-long political dynasty of the Asistios. A year later, Asistio loyalists filed a recall petition against Malonzo, citing a number of reasons and allegations. A recall election was conducted, and Malonzo emerged as winner.

Mayor Malonzo got reelected in the 1998 polls, the same elections that brought Joseph Estrada, a close friend of the Asistios, to Malacañang. In March 1999, the Office of the President ordered the suspension of Malonzo and several other Calookan City officials for graft, for realigning PhP 39 million of the city budget. Malonzo was suspended for 20 days.

In 2001, Malonzo won a third term, this time against former congressman Luis ‘Baby’ Asistio, whose family continued to make things difficult for the mayor. Luis Asistio filed a protest against Malonzo for declaring himself winner even before the Commission on Elections had issued its proclamation. Because of the case, Malonzo had to wait four months before assuming his seat.
